Oh My God!
Oh my god! I just found out that I, a 15 year old girl, can lease a horse! My mom found out and I have LOVED horses since I was 3. Here's the time line:
Age of 3 - fell in love with horses.
Age of 5 - decided I was going to work with horses.
Age of 8 - decided I was going to be a horse breeder
Age of 10 - figured out I wanted to go to the University or Kentucky at Lexington.
Age of 13 - figured out that my double major would be in: farm management, animal science. With a minor in: accounting.
Age of 15: started taking summer school to get ahead in science.
AGE OF 15: found out I am going to LEASE my VERY OWN HORSE!

I love horses! Any advice y'all have would be great! I have ridden before and I went to horse camp and all that. I do have enough experience with horses and I am told I have a "calming effect" on horses. I do live in Southern California by the way but don't knock about city life, I am going to move to Kentucky during my second year of college.

Have you taken ridden lessons? For how long exactly? If you've only ridden a horse a couple times with little proper instruction and been to one summer horse camp it doesn't sound like you very experienced. I've been riding since I was five and I've been in Pony Club. I've taken stable mangagement (a must for horse owners) and my family has owned 9 horses (two foals). I'm not trying to brag or say your totally inexperienced but I've been 'trained' in riding and horse care for a long time and even I still need alot of help. People think taking care of a horse is easy. Thats a laugh and a half. They are extremely expensive to buy, look after and buy stuff for. IF your family has a very good income then that should be alright. Also horses are herd animals so they need companions. If you are boarding that wouldn't be a prob but if you were to buy a farm and keep one horse there that could be. If you couldn't get another horse get a donky.

How long do you lease for? Here are some helpful tips..
*Make sure you ride at least 3-5 times/week
*Cool your horse out by walking him/her after riding and spray with hose if it's hot out
*Don't ride if it's unbearabley hot out!!
*ALWAYS groom and pick hooves before AND after riding
*Apply bugspray always
*Don't let them get away with things, but don't be to mean
*Lead them around alot
*Don't let them eat grass if you are leading or riding them
*Make a schedule for working your horse(for example
Monday-Trail Riding
Tuesday-Arena Work
Wednesday-Day Off or JUST Grooming
Thursday-Ground Work
Friday-Ground Work and Riding
Satur  day-Sho  w
Sunday-Day Off
*Clean tack after riding
*HAVE FUN! (Most Important Tip)
Good Luck!
