Track + Asthma = Not So Good
My senior year of high school, I decided that I was going to try track. I had been wanting to just try track for as long as I could remember, because it seemed a lot easier than a sport with a ball.
Wrong.
About a month or two before track started, I had an onset of being uber sick, like a cold times 100. As a result, I had to carry an inhaler with me whenever I did any time strenuous. I thought that by the time track started, I'd be okay.
Wrong. Again.
I struggled throughout track with or without my inhaler. I was put on shotput/discus to avoid all of the running as much as I could. Too bad I was absolutely terrible at both, and I was one of the older people on the team. They wanted to look up to me, but instead I had to look up to them because the younger people at least knew what they were doing.
So the moral of this story: 1) Contact your doctor before attempting a strenuous sport like track after an onset of asthma symptoms, of course. 2) Don't automatically assume that track is easy, like I did. I was out of shape, and it was hard. 3) If you're going to do track, start younger. At least you'll be a little better at this sort of thing!
Other than that.. I loved being outside and losing weight in unwanted places. I highly recommend doing track either way. :)
