What to Do?
I am 16 and have only taken skating lessons for a month. Am I too old? I started skating because my mom want me to have a hobby. I didn't know I would fall in love with skating. I took adult beginner's for skating. Should I be taking private lessons instead? I really love skating and I want to compete one day. But I'm afraid I won't make it that far because of the money problem. Are there any figure skating scholarships? I want to practice everyday but it's hard because of school and homework, so I only get one day to practice. How long should I practice for?

Reading this just completely made me smile, because i was exactly the same as you, just a little younger .. 2 years ago. I began when I was 13, and even then i thought i was too old. But i tried to not let that get in the way. I began with group classes in the beginning, and after i got to learning waltz jumps [the first jump you will learn in figure skating] ... i looked for a private coach as well. My family is not like super rich, but i still do it, so i think you can probably make it through. I mean if i had a ton of money, i would be taking like 2 hour provate lessons, but i cant.. so i guess it has some slight limitations, but public session is free, so i try to get there as much as i can. Weekend are always great too, if youre caught up in homework and stuff. what i learned was that over time.. i was able to fit it into my schedule, and still have enough time for everything else. its all about planning. So as far as how long you should be practicing for .. pretty much as much as you can. that is, the more you practice, the quicker you will get better. But back to your main question... you are definitly not too old. Sometimes you even have a slight advantage, because you learn things quicker then the younger kids. So as long as you :) it, stick with it! I stuck with it, and now im working on my lutz and sit spins, after a little less than 2 years. Im competing and everything. I belive you can do it, so stick with it and enjoy it .. cause figure skating is a wonderful sport!

you should try to go to public sessions on the weekends. even if you don't get to work on any elements, just skating around is good enough. You should be practicing at least twice a week. Money issues might be a problem, but what I suggest is taking the class AND getting a coach. But since you are just beginning you can probably wait a few months until you take private lessons.
