Why?!
Hey. I'm 15 and I do freestyle and butterfly. I'm not that fast though. Times:

200yd free- 3:10
100yd free- 1:32
100yd fly- 1:54

My problem is that I can't seem to really lower my fly. I'm not that bad at free but I'm one of the worst in butterfly! People tell me that I have to lift my arms higher but I know that one of the biggest problems is that I get tired very quickly.

What I don't get is that my stroke time should be pretty close to my freestyle time. Mine is almost 20 seconds apart! I'm kind of confused.

Does anyone have any tips? I love butterfly but should I just try another stroke too? I also want to know how much I will improve if I lose about 15- 20 pounds. Are there any cross-training exercises that can help me?

I swim all year round and that is really bad for free. At practice we do 200 free on 3 mins. I am even new to the team and I am good. I would work on my free time before the fly cause thats is just sad it takes you 3:10 to do a 200 free. In swim meets I do a 200 free in like 2:25

Tucking your head will make you go slower, to a certain extent. A 'drill' we do at my club team is swimming fly with a tenis ball under your chin. You can not tuck your head in all the way, but the space of a tenis ball is actually perfect. I makes you go much faster, believe me, and it promotes proper head position to avoid any sort of back or neck pain. I go a 1:03 fly also, and most guys I swim with go 55 seconds, or below. It's a great drill, so give it some time. Also, make sure to improve your kick and technique- to shave time off of those free times. (I got a 57 100 free, and a 2:02 200....)

i swim for highschool.

actually, i tried keeping my head tucked in and looking at my feet during my fly. it felt like i was going fast but then i was getting help from a guy who works at the pool who does 100yd fly in 1:03 and he said that tucking my head to much makes you go slower. im kinda confused now....

Weight isn't really that much of an issue in swimming. The more weight you pull, the stronger you are accordingly. It's being in SHAPE which counts. Be sure to glue your chin to your collarbone during yor fly, this will get your arms around faster. At first it will feel horrible (looking at your feet) but it WILL make you go faster. Secondly, try breathing to the side during your fly. It will help keep you lower in the water. A lot of olympians do this.
Are your turns fast enough? They reallyhave to be touch-n-go. Make sure you're not grabbing the top of the ledge when you turn. This wastes time and energy, believe me!
Are you fast reacting off the block? A start can take a second off your time. Remember to kick like hell off of your dive and turns. This can easily cut out 6 metres of swimming per turn. This means less butterfly. More energy.
Be sure to have a good break out stroke off your turns and dives as well.
Don't bob p and breathe before you turn.
