cheerleading doesnt require much talent at all. they let me be a cheerleader and im no where near skinny. its so overrated and it looks silly. All cheerleaders are snobs too

maybe not at your school. it depends on the school or all-star squad and their program. i'm one of the first to admit some squads suck and they're a disgrace to cheer-athletes everywhere. if i could do something about it, i would, but i can't.
but you don't win nationals championships at NCA or UCA for jumping around though. you have to be able to stunt and tumble. i'm sorry the squad at your school sucks, but you just don't know any better. you don't see the squads who require talent instead of just a cute smile.
check out this website and watch the videos, especially Grazier and Reggin, and THEN tell me it doesn't require any skill...

...and i highly doubt you know "all cheerleaders."

P.S. i think i've said this before, but so you guys know, it's not really 2:50 am here or whatever it says on there. it's only just now almost 1:00. i don't know why it does that...

yeah at my school i watched there audition even when teh head cheerleader zlz told us to leave, but they dont have power. it was soo horrible like all the girls i know on stage making a horrible routine like randomnly, and the heads like 'you guys are ok" they chose the skinny 9'ers who were like 'punk rockers' that wore pink skulls on converses becuz its ' girls over the wacko's before them ahah but meh maybe its just my school

yeah, i think it's just your school. my school was competitive so we expected a lot of tumbling from everyone on the squad, so obvioiusly we took people depending on their talent, not what they wore.
everyone wears the same thing on competition day, whether you're preppy, skater, geeky, goth or whatever.

Really? Well, for me I just join this after-school program with cheerleading but it's not serious so they let anyone join. But in for real, cheerleading is so difficult. You have to be able to do many gymnastic tricks (flips, tumbling, splits) and you have to practice really hard. At times it can be dangerous when you aren't careful.

Nina maybe at your school cheerleaders require no talent but at my school the certainly do require talent.

ok do you even know what your talking about? cheerleading does require talent in many many ways! first off, cheerleaders should be able to tumble. ( ummm let me think i think tumbling is a talent). also cheerleading requires dancing, did you ever see in talent shows people dance! that is a talent. you have to be loud. if you are loud enough for alot of people to hear you you are deffinitely telented. you have to have spirit, and being able to move your fingers really fast while sounding enthused its like walking and chewing gum! Also, STUNTING! if you are a flier you need to have balance, bases you have to be stiff so you dont drop the flier. that will take some talent. ok so thats like 5 ways you need to be talented. i know there is more too so you just got to look at the facts once cand a while... ok

It's true that there are some schools (like yours) which just have cheer leaders that stand on the sidelines and yell into megaphones, but alot of squads compete, which does take alot of talent. The squad at my school is very competitive, actually they went to nationals. And who says that cheerleaders are skinny. There are some heavy girls on the squad at my school, they to support the people on top of the pyramids, (flyers, I think they're called). All I'm saying is to not judge ALL cheerleaders based solely on you school.

thank you eric. it's good to have a non-cheerleader supporting us... and not just because you think cheerleaders are !

Nina's absolutely correct. It doesn't require rhythm at least. It holds true to the old rule of thumb: "Those that can't dance or have no talent for anything else, always have the option of cheerleading."
All you have to know how to do is hold your body right and be sharp. It's not hard. I was a dance captain my senior year. It took alot of time to polish and get down dance routines because they're so technical. In cheerleading (which I've never really done as a clear part of a team, but I know pretty much all there is to know), all you have to really do is know how to hold a good posse, v's, t's, boxes, correct body angles, and know how to balance and tumble well. It's not hard. You just have to be a little in shape and not butt ugly. But it's ALOT easier than dance BY FAR.
Come on.. look at how they "dance". It's like robot 3 year olds listening to top 40. I bet the person that invented cheerleader just couldn't dance but she could yell real loud.

Eric: Not to sound pessimistic, but most cheerleaders (i've met QUITE a few in my football game days, and I actually AM a person to go up and talk to ANYONE) are stuck up their own ass. They think just because they can hold a v (some can't, it's ny, some don't even have any strength in their arms, it bugs me so much) they're like some kind of ALLSTARZ CHEERLEADRZ. Eric, I understand you like to look up cheerleader skirts, but give up on defending them. l o l
Cheerleading has 3 purposes:
1) Personal Satisfaction and Assurance 2) Fitness 3) Young Boys' Fantasies
Thank you

Ashley, i'm sorry you have such a horrible experience with cheerleaders. i really am. i hate that you've only been exposed to the b*tchy, immature, NON-athlete kind of cheerleader. the truth is, cheerleading has evolved in the rest of the world. it IS a sport. it IS hard. any cheerleader that told you doing cheers and chants is hard, isn't an athlete. it's the stunts and tumbling that makes cheerleading hard.
there are two types of cheerleader (unfortunately): * the snobby kind that only wants to wear the skirt * the competitive athlete that is there to work hard and compete
it depends on the school or all-star program which kind of cheerleaders they have. obviously the snobby kind of cheerleader won't make a good competitive squad because they won't be good enough. on my squad, i could care less if you're horribly ugly or fat or whatever, as long as you have the required skills and are willing to work hard. we had a girl my freshman year that weighed about 175lbs, not the stereotypical cheerleader, but she was an amazing tumbler (former gymnast) and a great stunter, so everyone was happy to have her on our squad. we just want to win.
unfortunately there are still those squads that totally suck and would rather sit around and be pretty than try to stunt or tumble and break a nail, heaven forbid! and i'm afraid there will always be those kind of people, no matter what i try to do to change it. but you probably know how that is being a dancer. you know from experience that people tell you your sport isn't hard and blah blah. you've seen dance teams (like pom at my old high school) that completely suck and THOSE girls aren't athletes... but that shouldn't belittle what YOU do. you know what you do is hard and you know you're an athlete.
could you please drop it? you're practically hijacking our site. i'm sorry you've had a bad experience with cheerleaders, but i'm sure, if you're not a complete idiot, you know deep down that some cheerleaders are athletes and what we do is hard.
you can be immature and start calling me names, or you can take what i've said to heart and understand what i have said. do what you want. i don't care because i know deep down you know better.

PS - check out my toe touch picture. being a dancer, you should appreciate this at least. i had never danced before in my life until my senior year in high school. we went to camp and i made UDA All-Star and the staff pulled me up in front of the camp to do my toe touch again because they were amazed. so don't try to tell me this is or that i didn't work hard for this...

so i'm a cheerleader and i am also not skinny but being a cheerleader takes alot of Strength and Flexibility. i mean i am a full time base on my squad and doing some of those stunts is tough. and for the record i am not a snob.
Erica

in cheerleading, you don't have to be skinny. the bases & backspots can't be smaller than their flyer. okay, why does everyone insist that all cheerleaders are snobby? that is such a ridiculous stereotype. before you actually meet every cheerleader & can conclude that they are snobby, you should keep you mouth shut. i find it very offensive.

Um. Cheerleading may not require talent but it does require effort like any other sport would. Not all cheerleaders are snobby bitches. I have met a few cheerleaders who have respect, dignity, pride, valor, courage, responsibility, good citizenship, and etectera. If there is a problem with other cheerleaders, I highly suggest you expose yourself and meet several cheerleaders. I agree with what Katie said too because she has an excellent point. If you knew all cheerleaders, then you wouldn't be stereotyping ALL of them as snobby.

thanks a lot Emily... cheerleading doesn't require any talent? ugh....

That was my honest opinion. Cheerleading requires effort as any sport in the world. Your talent doesn't determine how well someone can cheer. We all have different strengths. We all have our own weaknesses. Sometimes, that goes for cheerleaders too because they weren't robots. I wasn't a robot on the squad and couldn't do every single move extant. I know that spirit is important on the squad because you are cheering for a team to convince them to win instead of lose. That was my whole point.
02-14-08 5:41 PM
but that's absolutely wrong. spirit is NOT everything. in fact in competition it's a very, very small portion of it. what you're going to get the major points, and what will determine who wins, is the squad's talent.
you can't have an opinion on this when you know NOTHING about it. butt out.
